A Washington County teacher has been charged with engaging in a sexual relationship with a student.
The initial complaint was made to the Hancock Police Department. Law Enforcement conducted a welfare check on a 17-year-old female, at the request of the Department of Social Services, due to allegations that the female was engaged in a sexual relationship with her teacher.
At the conclusion of the joint investigation, between the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and Hancock Police Department, Eric James Smith, 34, of Boonsboro, was charged with one count of Sex Abuse of a Minor and one count of Sex Offense 4th (sex act person of authority).
An arrest warrant was issued for Smith and he was taken into custody by the State of Maryland Apprehension Team in Howard County, Maryland. Smith is currently being held at the Howard County Department of Corrections.
