The Sheriff’s Office will be conducting a One-Day Entry Level Patrol Deputy Sheriff Hiring Event on Saturday, July 15, 2023, at 8:00 A.M. Applicants are to arrive at 7:30 A.M. for pre-registration. Physical Fitness/Handgun Familiarization Testing will begin promptly at 8:00 A.M. No late entries will be permitted.

The Release of Liability and Physician’s Certification MUST be completed and submitted on the testing date, July 15, 2023. The Physician’s Certification must be completed within 30 days of the Physical Fitness Test date to be considered valid. A valid government-issued photo identification is required at the time of testing.

The Patrol Division is the law enforcement arm of the Sheriff’s Office. Patrol Deputies enforce all criminal and traffic laws in Washington County. They patrol an area of 458 square miles containing 875 miles of county roads and 774 miles of state roads.

JOB OBJECTIVES:
The primary objective of the Court Security Deputy is to provide safety/security/movement for all inmates in the Circuit Court of Washington County.

The Judicial Division’s primary responsibilities are to provide security for the Circuit Court Judges, trials, and Circuit Court grounds, serve all legal papers issued by the District and Circuit Courts and prisoner transports.
Judicial Deputies are Maryland-certified police officers and perform law enforcement duties as may be necessary.

The Law Enforcement Cadet position is trainee-level law enforcement work for individuals between the ages of 18 and 21. The Cadet will experience various duties and responsibilities performed by sworn personnel to prepare for and anticipate the Cadet’s acceptance and entry into a Maryland-accredited Law Enforcement Academy. A cadet who has reached the age of 21 is only eligible to serve in such a position until acceptance and entry into the next available law enforcement academy class. Employment will be terminated if the cadet cannot successfully enter and complete the academy.

GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:
Ensure facility safety and security through the application of established criteria in the classification and reclassification of inmates to specific levels of security supervision and housing. Respond to the legitimate concerns of the inmates by providing counseling and assistance in conducting court-related and personal business. Ensure inmate safety and general welfare by identifying, directing, or recommending appropriate conditions of confinement and treatment for inmates who exhibit abnormal psychology, are physically handicapped, or who pose unusual security risks. Interface with facility staff and other professional persons
representing related agencies to ensure the adequate flow of information necessary for making appropriate classification assignments and effectively conducting related business. Be knowledgeable of facility policies and operational procedures, especially those related to Classification. Ensure the confidentiality of official information through proper handling, storage, and transmission. Promote rehabilitative programming. Keep abreast of current trends in inmate classification practices and corrections in general. Display appropriate standards of conduct.

- Gather and document information concerning newly incarcerated inmates, including, but not limited to, criminal history, mental health history, etc.

- Disseminate information pertinent to safety and security to other staff as appropriate.
- Using established criteria, coordinate the classification of eligible inmates to industrial assignments with appropriate staff.
