The Patrol Division is the law enforcement arm of the Sheriff’s Office. Patrol Deputies enforce all criminal and traffic laws in Washington County. They patrol an area of 458 square miles containing 875 miles of county roads and 774 miles of state roads.

- Judicial Division
Entry-level: $52,000

The Judicial Division’s primary responsibilities are to provide security for the Circuit Court Judges, trials, and Circuit Court grounds, serve all legal papers issued by the District and Circuit Courts and prisoner transports.
Judicial Deputies are Maryland-certified police officers and perform law enforcement duties as may be necessary.

The Detention Division’s primary responsibility is the care and confinement of persons committed to the Washington County Detention Center.
Detention Deputies have no police authority and are responsible for managing the inmate population in all facets of daily activities including, controlling inmate movement, monitoring recreation, visiting privileges, performing searches and assisting inmates in solving problems.

- Law Enforcement Cadet
APPLICATIONS ARE CURRENTLY BEING ACCEPTED FOR A JULY 1, 2022 HIRE DATE.
Entry-level: $26,707
The Washington County Sheriff’s Office is currently accepting applications for the Law Enforcement Cadet position. This position is trainee-level law enforcement work for individuals between the ages of 18 and 20. The starting salary is $26,707 with a competitive benefits package

The Law Enforcement Cadet position is trainee-level law enforcement work for individuals between the ages of 18 and 21. The Cadet will experience various duties and responsibilities performed by sworn personnel in preparation for and anticipation of the Cadet’s acceptance and entry into a Maryland accredited Law Enforcement Academy. A cadet who has reached the age of 21 is only eligible to serve in such a position until acceptance and entry into the next available law enforcement academy class. Employment will be terminated if the cadet cannot successfully enter and complete the academy.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Graduate or G.E.D.
- Minimum of 18 years of age and no older than 20 years of age.
- To achieve necessary scores in competitive testing, (written, psychological, and oral interview testing).
- Successful completion of agency background investigation, (to include polygraph/CVSA testing, physical fitness testing), with no disqualifying factors. Falsification of any portion of the application would be a disqualifying factor. Applicants must be of good moral character.
- Complete post-job offers physical and psychological examination by a licensed physician and psychologist with no disqualifying factors. Must be in good physical condition with weight commensurate to height and body build.
- Applicants must be a citizen of the United States at the time of appointment.
- Applicants must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license to operate any class of vehicle necessary to perform the duties of the position.

JOB TITLE: Senior Office Associate Judicial GRADE: (8) Annual Salary 35,506.00 DEPARTMENT: Sheriff’s Office FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt REPORTS TO: Captain of Judicial LOCATION: Patrol Division GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:
To accomplish assigned duties in a competent, efficient manner that will enhance the division’s ability to complete its assigned mission. This includes various office setting responsibilities to include typing , filing, operation of office equipment and contacts with the public.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:
These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position.
The Sheriff reserves the right to amend or deviate from this job description if, in his opinion, it is in the best interests of the Sheriff’s Office.
- Processing and recording all summonses and subpoenas received from District and Circuit Courts, out of county and out of state.
- Assigning legal documents to deputies for service and recording service, recalls or nonets papers. Receiving and updating information concerning legal documents forwarded to the Department of Social Services, (new addresses, dates/times for attempts, ect.)
- Maintains system of accountability of all summons activity on computer system.
- Keeps daily court schedules of sentencing, modifications, and juvenile hearings.
- Types arrest reports for deputies after service of criminal summonses.
- Distributes mail and other departmental paperwork to Courts and various other agencies.
- Maintain radio communications as necessary with judicial deputies.
- Types memos and other correspondence for the Lieutenant and other personnel.
- On occasion, relieves deputies on Courthouse security details.
- On occasion, searches females that are sentenced to the Detention Center when a female deputy is not available.
- Complies bi-weekly activity and leave reports.
- Responds to public inquires received in person and by phone.
- Maintains system of accountability for checks coming into the office.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Ability to type a minimum of 25 words per minute.
- Possession of a working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs.
- Ability to complete any training required by the Sheriff’s Office.
- Ability to use a variety of office machines, i.e. copier, fax, personal computer, telephone etc.
- Ability to work with sensitive/confidential information and ability to maintain confidentiality of such information.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to a, personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. No significant standing, walking, moving, climbing, carrying, bending, kneeling, crawling, reaching and handling, pushing and pulling.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Possession of a valid driver’s license
- Minimum age of 18 at time of hire.
