The primary objective of sworn personnel in the Judicial Division is to provide for the secure operation of Courts and related facilities, to execute service of warrants and other legal documents, and to transport prisoners for court.

The duties of a Judicial Deputy include operating security devices to maintain the efficient, safe operation of business in the Courthouse, paper service, and other occasional duties common to all sworn law enforcement personnel in the Department.

- As required or instructed by higher authority, the performance of duties as prescribed for Patrol Deputy. Provides back-up for Patrol Deputies when needed. - Provides security for the Washington County Circuit Court Building through various means to include operation of magna-scanners. Report and make arrests, when necessary, on subjects unlawfully carrying weapons entering the courthouse, or other illegal activities.
- Provide courtroom security. Maintains order in and around courtrooms.
- Transports inmates to and from the Detention Center for court, emergency commitments, etc.
- Executes various types of legal process to include warrant service, summons service, seizures as directed by the court, and service of emergency commitment papers for mentally disturbed subjects.

- Conduct investigations on threats towards judges and other public officials, bomb threats or suspicious packages.

The Detention Division’s primary responsibility is the care and confinement of persons committed to the Washington County Detention Center.

The primary objective of this position is to expose selected individuals to a career in Law Enforcement. The non-sworn position is considered a bridge for young adults between the ages of 18-21 to be employed with the Sheriff’s Office prior to entry into the police academy.
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE ASSIGNMENT:
The Cadet will be exposed and experience various duties within the agency that could be considered ancillary duties to the mission of providing the public safety function. This will be accomplished by working with sworn members of this agency and being exposed to the everyday responsibilities of the Patrol Deputy.

Maintains secure and orderly accountability for all Patrol Division investigative reports, ledgers, logs, statistical documents, and other documents crucial to the efficient operation of the Patrol Division. Compiles statistical data for submission to Federal and State agencies. Disseminate case files as required for Sheriff’s Office personnel court appearances. Responsible for the overall security of all of the Patrol Division records.

The Law Enforcement Cadet position is trainee-level law enforcement work for individuals between the ages of 18 and 21. The Cadet will experience various duties and responsibilities performed by sworn personnel to prepare for and anticipate the Cadet’s acceptance and entry into a Maryland-accredited Law Enforcement Academy. A cadet who has reached the age of 21 is only eligible to serve in such a position until acceptance and entry into the next available law enforcement academy class. Employment will be terminated if the cadet cannot successfully enter and complete the academy.
