Can I check to see if someone is wanted?
We do not give information over the telephone regarding someone being wanted, but will take any information you have on someone you may think is wanted. We will check and if the person is wanted, we will have an officer follow-up on your information. You can always come in person to the Sheriff’s Office to see if you are wanted.
I received a notice from District Court of a court date; do I still need to be served a Criminal Summons?
You need to be served with the Criminal Summons because it not only gives you the charges filed and probable cause information, but provides you with some information regarding obtaining an attorney.
I received a notice regarding a Peace Order Service Fee due.
There is a $40.00 service fee payable to the Sheriff’s Office on all Peace Orders issued, except those that qualify under VAWA (Violence Against Women’s Act). If this fee is not paid, the matter is forwarded to a Collection Agency to handle. This fee is payable in cash only at the Sheriff’s Office between 8:00AM and 4:00PM Monday-Friday.
What is the fee to have a summons or subpoena served?
Inside the state of Maryland, the fee is 60.00. Outside the State of Maryland, the fee is $60.00.
My tenant hasn't paid rent in the last two months, how do I get them out?
Contact District Court and file a Failure to pay rent notice.
My landlord told me there is an eviction scheduled; don't they have to give me thirty days’ notice?
Once the Judge signs the Warrant of Restitution (Eviction order) you can be evicted at any time after that.

You must contact the court to begin the eviction process.

I received a telephone call from someone saying they are the IRS and they are sending the police to arrest me unless I settle my case?
The IRS will not contact you by telephone, this is a scam. DO NOT give them any personal information or money. If you are a victim of an IRS scam and have sent them money please, contact the Sheriff’s Office non-emergency line at 240-313-4345 to file a report.

How do I get a copy of a police or accident report?
Please allow 3-5 days for the report to be completed and approved. You may contact our records division at 240-313-2106 or come in person to 500 Western Maryland Parkway, Hagerstown, Maryland. The records division is located in the Patrol Building.
Someone has my property and they are refusing to return it what should I do?
Depending upon the total value of the property, you must either contact the District or Circuit Court for Replevin or Detinue Action, the Sheriff’s Office will not assist in the recovery of property between private parties:
• If the amount is under $5,000, the case is brought in District Court.
• If the amount is over $30,000, the case is brought in Circuit Court.
• If the amount is between $5,000 and $30,000, the case can be brought in District Court or Circuit Court
