Media Release: Updated Information
On June 16, 2019 at approximately 7:25 PM, Deputies responded to the 11300 block of Massey Blvd., Hagerstown, MD, in reference to a pedestrian accident.
Through the investigation, it has been determined that a 2000 Dodge Van became stuck in a gravel area just off the parking lot of the Dollar Tree, 11305 Massey Blvd., Hagerstown, MD.
An occupant of the vehicle, identified as Patricia M. Braunling, 49, of Pennsylvania, exited and was pushing on the front of the vehicle in an attempt to help push it back onto the parking lot. Investigators believe that instead of placing the vehicle into reverse, the driver mistakenly placed the vehicle into drive. When the driver pushed on the gas pedal the vehicle jumped forward, striking Braunling. The vehicle continued down the embankment onto Massey Blvd., over the median, crossing the remainder of Massey Blvd. The vehicle continued to travel over the curb, through grass and over Valley Mall Road. After circling the parking area near JC Penney’s, the vehicle came to rest on Valley Mall Road.
The driver of the vehicle has been identified as Angelika B Metz, 73, of Pennsylvania.
Metz and a juvenile occupant in the vehicle were unharmed. Braunling was transported to Meritus Medical Center where she later died.
Metz has been charged with Negligent Driving, Driving revoked out of state, Driving while suspended fail to attend driver improvement, Person driving motor vehicle on highway on suspended out of state, Driving motor vehicle without required license, Operating unregistered motor vehicle on highway, and Displaying expired registration plate.
