MEDIA RELEASE:
On April 18, 2017 at approximately 4:00 PM, Detectives from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office observed a VW Jetta traveling westbound on Route 40. The Detectives recognized the Jetta to be one that was reported stolen. The Detectives followed the Jetta until it stopped in front of Chipotle, 18003 Garland Groh Blvd., Hagerstown. Detective confronted the vehicle, at which point the Jetta took off. In the process of fleeing the scene the Jetta struck the Detectives unmarked vehicle.
The Jetta traveled through the Garland Groh Blvd. area, striking two civilian vehicles in the area of Garland Groh Blvd and Route 40. The Jetta continued onto Route 40 eastbound where it struck a Sheriff’s Deputies patrol vehicle, causing extensive damage to the vehicle and injuring the Deputy.
As Law Enforcement vehicles pursued, the Jetta continued eastbound on Route 40, turning into Washington Avenue. The Jetta traveled through an alleyway and across onto W. Washington Street. The Jetta traveled through several side streets before stopping on Elizabeth Street. All but one of the Jetta’s occupants exited the Jetta and took off running.
With the help of tracking K-9’s, Maryland State Police Aviation, Troopers and Hagerstown Police Officers, occupants of the Jetta were located and detained.
The injured Deputy was transported to Meritus Medical Center and later released.
