Job Description
General Responsibilities
Responsible for the general condition and operational efficiency of the facility. Responsible for establishing and maintaining a preventive maintenance schedule on systems, grounds, buildings and machinery, making predictive and corrective repairs as needed. Coordinating and supervising the work of contractors. Training and supervision of inmates classified to work details. Reasonably ensure safety conditions in staff and inmate work areas, inmate living areas and all public common areas. Maintain tools in proper working order. Maintain accurate key, tool and chemical control inventories. Coordinate maintenance projects with command staff. Ensure cost effective operations. Ensure the confidentiality and security of any and all official information. Become familiar with and operate within facility policies and procedures. Display appropriate standards of conduct. Successfully complete training as required by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission.
Examples of Work
- Conduct routine daily facility inspections, being proactive in the detection of deteriorating conditions of the facility, systems and equipment, identifying and correcting prior to a failure.
- Conduct routine maintenance and repairs.
- Purchase hardware and supplies to ensure continuous operation.
- Monitor and maintain environmental control systems (HVAC, Domestic Hot Water, and Hot Water Heat Systems).
- Train and supervise inmate work details such as, mowing, snow removal, painting, general office cleaning, building maintenance, trash pickup, etc.
- Coordinate maintenance projects with facility supervisor, command staff and outside contractors.
- Assist with Fire Safety, MOSHA, MCCA, and Health Department inspections as well as conduct inventories of keys, locks, tools, chemicals and supplies.
- Maintain accurate records of issued supplies, chemicals, tools, gas, diesel and inspections.
- Complete projects involving, carpentry, welding, fabrication, masonry, and infrastructure upgrades.
- Research, test and advise facilities supervisor concerning the utility and cost-effectiveness of new products or methods.
- Assist in the preparation of budgets.
- Safely operate equipment as needed (Pickup truck with or without snow plow, skid steer loader, zero-turn mower and walk behind mowers).
Minimum Qualifications
Twenty one years of age. Good physical condition. High school diploma or equivalent. Possession of a current valid driver’s license. No previous felony arrests. Able to, understand and follow written and oral instructions. Able to read blueprints and schematic drawings. Excellent knowledge of, and the ability to operate, maintain, and repair a variety of mechanical equipment. Excellent knowledge of building maintenance and landscaping. Adequate knowledge of computers and network structuring. The ability to train and supervise a small number of unskilled workers. The ability to complete the Maryland Entry Level Correctional Academy within one year of hire.
Desirable Qualifications
Previous experience in institutional and or industrial maintenance. Strong background in plumbing, electrical and building maintenance.
